Caroline Rose - Under the Influence - Soundblab

Caroline Rose

by Rich Morris Rating: Release Date:

Caroline Rose is a fiery 24-year-old songwriter raised on rockabilly, vintage country and the blues. Her records make you think of Dansettes, red convertibles, bobby socks and a whole load of assorted Americana – but underneath is an audible punk spirit and raw emotion. Her new album, I Will Not Be Afraid, is out now.

First single you bought

Oh boy. I can't remember that. I dunno, probably something terrible like ‘The Thong Song’.

First album you bought

It was either S.C.I.E.N.C.E by Incubus or one of the early Blink 182 records like Dude Ranch or Enema of the State. Those were the ones I would have bought on my own because my parents wouldn't let us listen to that stuff. Too many curse words and sex-talk or whatnot.

Favourite artist of all time

Right now, it's Roy Orbison ‘cause I was literally just listening to him. I adore him, he was so good at being sad. I love the classic songwriters - Neil, Joni, Dylan, Townes - but in the same vein I've always dug jazz and blues and surf rock, math rock, vintage country, French pop, classical music.

Philip Glass is one of my favorites. And I can't go a week without listening to Symphony No 5 at least 18 times. Link Wray, Jay-Z, Patti Smith, Led Zeppelin, CCR, Booker T & the MGs, The Ventures, Dave Brubeck, Manu Chao... Cumbia, rumba. I think my heaven would be listening to Tabu Ley Rochereau on repeat. The whole northwest punk scene, or just that whole era of punk and proto-punk, ugh. I hate music...

Favourite current artist

Father John Misty is one of my favorites right now. War on Drugs, Kurt Vile, Lakestreet Dive, King Tuff, Laura Marling, I looooove this band called La Femme. Battles is one of my favorites, and there are some killer Japanese hardcore bands that are crushing.

Favourite period in music history

Right now it's 70s punk. The stuff coming out of LA then - The Cramps, Gun Club, X, 45 Grave - it was so diverse and just fucking badass. The layers of styles then are really underrated in history I think. But there are so many wonderful eras in music. I tend to gravitate towards the more rebellious periods, I just think the music is always better.
