John Carpenter - ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 / THE FOG [12" VINYL]

by Gerry Hathaway Rating:6 Release Date:2016-06-17

Film score vinyl continues to enjoy a unique resurgence amongst the synth and horror community where physical media matters most. Assault on Precinct 13 b/w The Fog is the second in a series of new renditions of classic John Carpenter themes, with updated production from the core team of John, his son Cody, and godson Daniel Davies.

The arrangements remain identical while benefiting from additional synth atmospherics compared to the much drier originals.  Assault on Precinct 13 cyclically plods on with fuzzy synth bass and mournful string washes. The proggy Escape From New York is the strongest cut with layers of piano, guitar, and rock drums adding considerable power to the track.

Neither theme is different enough from the original to elicit much renewed excitement. However, the sleek new recordings provide added dimension to the compositions which the original’s lacked -  ultimately making this release worth seeking out.
