Tender Prey/Jane Weaver - Pleasure Pain Principle / Time Will Steal

by Steve Ricciutti Rating:8.5 Release Date:2015-10-28

Tender Prey’s single, 'Pleasure Pain Principle', is an infectious song featuring Jane Weaver’s itchy vocals (hints of Miki Berenyi from Lush) reiterating, “I like it, but it hurts” over and over until you’re dying to be hurt some more. These catchy chants are combined with an anti-pop, repetitive chorus style reminiscent of Viv Albertine. The interplay between guitar, drum, and keyboards is pure joy.

The b-side, 'Time Will Steal', has a chugging, crunchy guitar melody upon which Jane Weaver’s angelic punk vocals rest, barely rising above the distortion and metronomic drumming. Not as pop tasty as the a-side, but still a great enticement, leaving me wanting more.
