Arborist - Twisted Arrow (Featuring KIM DEAL) [VINYL]

by Warwick Stubbs Rating:8 Release Date:2015-05-18

You're listening to a simply acomplished folk song in the vein of Neil Young complete with vocals that don't stray far from Young's plaintiff moments. However, in this song there are no struggling tenor pitches breaking your heart.

Instead, you get a quiet setting with gently accompanying solo strings and backing vocals over acoustic guitars, bass and drums. Beyond the sudden accents with subtle splashes and guitar stabs at the chorus, nothing moves away from this setting - neither the tempo nor the dynamics. If this were an album signifier, it would either going to pique your interest in finding an album that sits comfortably on your listening programme late Sunday, or you might find this song on its own is enough.

If you are a lover of folk music and the simplicity of Neil Young's quieter moments, but without overbearing harmonies, this will be perfect for you - I certainly can't see how it can be disliked. Have a listen, see where it takes you; perhaps you want to sway in the cool winter sunlight, perhaps you want to lie back and just soak it all up.

*I just want to point out that it's winter in my country right now!
