Gary Calamar - The Anti-Social, Young American, Christmas Lovers Brigade

by Rich Morris Rating:9 Release Date:2014-12-19

So this is maybe Christmas from a hipster’s perspective? I dunno. Like The Waitresses’ deathless ‘Christmas Wrapping’, this song is about moping right up until Christmas Day and then really getting into the spirit.

However, in the 21st century Hipster Reich, being sulky and apathetic all year round and then going bonkers at a gratuitous orgy of consumerism, food and sickly, Disney-copyrighted, infantilising smush doesn’t need any explaining or justifying. It’s just situation normal for our bright young things.

Anyway, whatevs, cos this is a bloody great Christmas song, pitched somewhere between prime R.E.M. and Jonathan Richman. It’s countrified slacker-rock par excellence with added semi-ironic bells and just the right kind of sneery vocals. Which means you can enjoy it, and the festive season, while still being all snarky and cynical like a massively thumpable child in an episode of Doctor Who. Win.

Oh, and it's a free download which can be found here: https://garycalamar.bandcamp.com/track/the-anti-social-young-american-christmas-lovers-brigade

Double win.
