Evil Blizzard - Nothing for Christmas

by Andy Brown Rating:10 Release Date:2014-12-08

Christmas songs come in all shapes and sizes but I don’t think there’s ever been anything quite like ‘Nothing for Christmas’. Let me introduce the wonderfully insane Evil Blizzard; six masked men from Preston with a penchant for two-note riffs and noise.

They have a singing drummer and four of the other members play bass. Think of them as one dwarf short of a fairytale, except they’re called Prowler, Side, Filthy Dirty, Kav, Stomper and Blizzpig.

‘Nothing for Christmas’ starts quietly enough; bells chime as singer Mark Whiteside (that’s Side to you and me) begins what will surely become a traditional Christmas chant: “Nothing for Christmas/ I hope that you get nothing for Christmas”. Its gentle melancholy is then shattered by a sudden eruption of some seriously heavy riffs. It’s a genuinely brilliant slice of Christmas rock, catchy enough to stay lodged in your head all through the Boxing Day hangover and riff-hungry enough to scare the Christmas pudding out of your unsuspecting neighbours.

If you buy the single (which I strongly recommend you do), you’ll also get some stoner-rock-via-PIL versions of festive favourites ‘We Three Kings’ and ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’. It’s festive, it’s evil and it’s a damn sight better than Cliff Richard. The Blizz just made your Christmas and you don’t even know it yet.
