Joanna Gruesome - Anti-Parent Cowboy Killers

by Rich Morris Rating:10 Release Date:2014-08-02

Cardiff’s angriest band (they formed during anger management sessions, apparently – not sure it’s working) weave pure punk-pop gold out of their mix of riot grrrl and the library-card-wielding end of late-80s/early-90s indie. While the vocals switch between lovely, detached dream-pop harmonies and classic shouty-brat riot grrrl attitude, the guitars careen forward on grunge-meets-C86 energy. I’ve no idea what it’s about, but the result is complete perfection. Attention, all other bands taking from the same reference points as Joanna Gruesome – don’t bother, you’re not as good.

I must listen to these guys, never heard them. I'm off to see Boris tonight at the Bowery Ballroom in NY. This place is great for music fans !

Great band on record. One I haven't seen live though. 'Wuzzy Void' off their 'Weird Sister' album is so Shop Assistants / Flatmates

Actually, it was a bit of a turgid mess. Powerful but I was underwhelmed. Sub Rosa on the other hand were fantastic.

Yep the Japanese band, Boris. They were OK. Flashes of brilliance but little variation and a bit sludgy.

Yeah, that's basically how I find their music.

They went oddly paisley pop on one track last night.

They segued into his kind of cute pop thing. The Brooklyn ale was strong, sure, but the Japanese love their candy coloured shit
