Poly Styrene - Ghoulish

by Niall O'Conghaile Rating:7 Release Date:2011-08-22

The second single from the late, great Poly Styrene's last album is here, and it's a slice of summery Britpop apparently inspired by the life and death of Michael Jackson. That might explain why underneath the shimmering guitar and super catchy chorus something darker is afoot. For some reason this single reminds me of the 90s classic drama This Life, but as reflected through the 00s reality TV prism of cruelty and nihilism.

On the flip Hercules & Love Affair work their magic on the track, turning it into a solid dancefloor groove, albeit one that goes nowhere particularly exciting. Ah, Poly Styrene - to quote Joni Mitchell: "You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone".
