The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - The Body

by Steve Rhodes Rating:6.5 Release Date:2011-07-25

The third release from their excellent sophomore album Belong, 'The Body' is perhaps an odd choice for The Pains of Being Pure at Heart to showcase as a single. It certainly possesses the sugared, anthemic singalong indie-pop which TPOBPAH are renowned for, along with the beefed-up production of their recent sound, but it feels more restrained and rather weightless. It lacks the immediacy and drive of 'Heart in Your Heartbreak', 'Young Adult Fiction' or Higher Than the Stars', though it's pretty difficult though for a band that has released such aforementioned heavyweight and instantaneous singles to maintain that consistency. There's certainly nothing wrong with 'The Body', it's still a very good tune that will keep the head nodding and the toes tapping, but maybe a song from deep within the leftfield would have been a more interesting choice to release.
