Panda Bear - Last Night at the Jetty

by Mark Young Rating:5 Release Date:2011-04-01

'Last Night at the Jetty' is one of three singles from Animal Collective member Panda Bear's latest solo album Tomboy. The follow up to 2007's superb Person Pitch, it is released on April 12. The artist - real name Noah Lennox - says he has taken on a change of direction with this album, with a lot more guitar and drums compared to an almost exclusive reliance on synthesisers in the past. With this track, he appears to have softened 'round the edges somewhat too.

For a start, you can clearly make out what he's singing this time around, a privilege also granted on the latest Animal Collective efforts. The song has a delicate balance. It's a reflection on times gone by; times that seem, just about, to be revered but there's a slightly sinister undercurrent to the song, mostly through a backing track of sinister whispering which rears its head from time to time and which is given the final word in the song. This makes for uncomfortable listening in parts.

The stacks of reverb used in the song make for a good dream-like, under water effect but it could probably benefit from being about half as long as it is. It doesn't really develop any momentum and begins to get monotonous towards the end. This song would not be out of place on the band's most recent album, Merriweather Post Pavillion and, given Polar Bear's demonstrated ability to innovate, this is a little bit disappointing. We'll have to wait to hear the rest of Tomboy to see if he's got anything new up his sleeve.
