Broken Bells - Meyrin Fields EP

by Dan Clay Rating:6.5 Release Date:2011-04-18

After the critical success of last year's Broken Bells release, The High Road, which saw producer Danger Mouse team up with Shins frontman James Mercer, comes a four-track EP of outtakes beefed up with superior production.

The

brings Mercer's Shins rhythms and melodies to the fore suggesting the new band line-up and this hopefully brief collaboration won't keep him from his day job for too long.

Closer '

feels out of kilter with the rest, its distorted backing lacking the urgency of the other three tracks and drifting along happily when it should be sticking firmly in the brain. That's probably the main problem here - there's nothing for you to incessantly hum after you've heard it. Shins fans have been spoilt by Mercer's alternative melodies and distinctive vocals. The latter's here in abundance, but the former seems to have missed the boat at times.
