Young Man - Up So Fast

by Emily Bielby Rating:6.5 Release Date:2011-03-14

Colin Caulfield, now there's a name keen YouTube users may recognise. No? Well how about Young Man? Colin Caulfield aka Young Man began his musical adventures by posting fine covers that he customised to his own liking on YouTube. He then began posting originals and in return his list of subscribers gradually increased, and he was left with a domineering fanbase, proving that a young lad with hidden musical talents was no myth and that there was in fact something special about the singer-songwriter, and if that's not enough proof, even Deerhunter front man Bradford Cox tipped him off; calling his cover of 'Rainwater Cassette Exchange' "fantastically superior to the original" and I agree. With his EP Boy underway, the first single, 'Up So Fast', seems to already be making big news among music critics; it's acoustic dream-pop at its finest.

Lyrically the track exposes the concept of growing up too fast, and brisk guitars and repetitive instrumentation create a warm and very dream-like feel, perfectly suitable for the summery/uplifting atmosphere at present. Layered vocals on top add extra charm; this is especially noticeable in the chorus when he softly sings, "I'm a boy, I'm a boy, I'm a boy, I'm a little boy" in a sentimental manner. The single's b-side, 'Strangers', is a similarly beautiful and heartfelt effort, from its finely plucked guitar intro to the intense build up, which leads to a more up tempo ending. If 'Up So Fast' is anything to go by, I think it's safe to say that if you didn't know who Colin Caulfield is, you will do now.
