Braids - Lemonade/Plath Heart

by Andy Brown Rating:7.5 Release Date:2011-03-13

It's a cold but gloriously sunny day and I'm listening the first single to be released from Montreal band Braids upcoming debut album Native Speaker. There's an undimmed positivity to Braids' music that goes perfectly with days like this - it's almost enough to inspire me to open the curtains and actually, ye know, go outside. Think I'll play it one more time first though.

It's a double a-side and the first track, 'Lemonade', seeps through yr speakers like Animal Collective on Merriweather Post Pavilion. Its dreamy soundscapes envelope lead singer Raphaelle Standell-Prestons' delicately charming vocals as she gets all excited like Bjork in her Sugarcubes days. Second track, 'Plath Heart', is a wonderfully upbeat, poppy affair with Raphaelle's vocals now recalling Joanna Newsom circa The Milk-Eyed Mender. It's a little slice of quirky, pop perfection.

Gloriously sunny stuff…
