The Strokes - Under Cover of Darkness

by Richard Howard Rating:8.5 Release Date:

It's been a long time coming but The Strokes are back and boy is that a good thing.

Out in the wilderness since 2006, their distinctive sound smacks you in the face within the first few seconds of comeback single Under Cover of Darkness. All jangling guitars, funky drum beats and the unique drawl of Julian Casablancas make The Strokes what they are. It's hardly a new path they're treading but it still stands head and shoulders above most of the bland and characterless bands around at the moment.

Perhaps leaning more towards their first two albums than their last effort 'First Impressions of Earth' which for many is a positive. Under Cover of Darkness kicks straight into high tempo and relentless guitars, with the trademark start-stop drums providing the base and Casablancas stamping his mark all over this energetic tune.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it and The Strokes may have learned their lesson after trying something a tad different on album number three, reverting to type with another dose of stylish indie-rock. Under Cover of Darkness is almost a nostalgic reminder of how good The Strokes used to be, expect 'Is This It' and 'Room on Fire' to get an airing for many after listening to it.

This track is sure to whet the appetite for many with upcoming album 'Angles' due for release in March.
