Sea of Bees - The Woods EP

by Adam Leach Rating:7 Release Date:2010-10-19

It is hard to imagine a more annoying and monotonous sound than that of a sea of bees. So it seems slightly strange that 26-year-old singer/songwriter Julie Baenziger chose it as her moniker, as the sound that Ms Baenziger conjures is anything but a monotonous din.

With her single 'The Woods' and its beautiful combination of melancholic, echoey vocals served on a bed of acoustic guitar she crafted three and a half minutes of rich, hypnotic, smile-forcing music. Polished off with her lovely lilting voice and love-sick lyrics about 'watching clouds go by' and 'dying happy as a bird' this opening song leaves you salivating for more.

Sadly though, the 'more' on this EP clocks in at just 53 seconds. However, whilst 'Lightfriend' may serve as little more than a musical after-dinner mint, it is heavy on glockenspiel and for that it deserves credit - there just aren't enough glockenspiel centric songs these days.

Comparisons between Baenziger and artists like Feist or Joanna Newsome are easy to make, but taking this small offering as a yardstick are well deserved. Suffice to say, there will be a lot of buzz around 'Sea Of Bees' in the very near future.
