Black Mountain - Old Fangs

On 'Old Fangs', the first single from their eagerly awaited album Wilderness Heart, the Canadian space-rockers depart from their usual expansive, drugged-up vibe. Their newly pared-back sound is a solid, no frills, chug-a-long rock refinement.

Sure enough, they still retain that journeying quality that swirled on In the Future. Fuzzed, mid-tempo guitars pump evenly like pistons while the stripped back rhythm engine ticks over formidably. But it is the languid breeze of Steve McBean and Amber Webber's dual vocal delivery that gives 'Old Fangs' character. In hushed tones they converse through melody, Webber's mirrored lines coquettishly beckoning from afar, imbuing the stoned ambience with secretly sexual yearning.

True, this track won't win over many new fans. But it's a decent taste of what's to come from this notably original art collective.
