Orphan Boy - Pop Song

by Amy Baker Rating:9 Release Date:2010-07-19

'Pop Song' is the debut single from Grimsby band Orphan Boy's second album Passion, Pain and Loyalty and I have the distinct feeling that these guys are going to be big. The lyrics are clever and catchy and the guitar riffs are upbeat and memorable - the perfect combination. The opening few bars wouldn't have sounded out of place in the 90s if played amongst the likes of Shed Seven and Suede and at times the lead singers' voice is reminiscent of Morrissey. Not exactly bad credentials.

Their lyrical charm is what makes Orphan Boy stand out. With humorous lyrics like "i sold my only pop song/ to the lads from EMI/ One had a thin moustache, the other had thin eyes," it's impossible not to nod along with a smile. The band's story telling ability means that it's memorable and offers something that will appeal to all. Do yourself a favour and buy the album when it comes out on August 2 - I'm going to.
