nick nicely - All Along The Watchtower c/w The Doors of Perception
- by Jeff Penczak Release Date:2018-12-31 Label: Fruits De Mer

nicely [sic] originally intended covering the Dylan chestnut at Fruits De Mer’s Lucid Dreams Festival in Wurzburg, Germany in 2017 as a twin guitar onslaught with Paul Simmons from The Bevis Frond. Plans were scuppered when nicely didn’t make the festival and the Frond played on a different day, so nicely slapped some studio vocals, guitar, and effects onto the backing tapes for the weirdest version you’ll ever here. Treated, spoken word vocals battle with phased, backwards instrumentation, paint-peeling solos, and a few nearby kitchen sinks chucked in for good measure! I think there are vestiges of Dylan in there somewhere and he may love this better than anyone!
Be careful as you turn this over or you might knock your head on the ceiling and pass out…or down. More live tapes collide with studio shenanigans, choir vocal effects that’d make Queen proud (and jealous) float around the room, and an incessant rhythm track threatens to soar into hyperspace, but just about manages to keep its feet on terra firma. Just. It also fades out with a rather boss head nod to Bowie’s ‘Memory Of A Free Festival’! Avant pop from one of our more adventurous sonic experimenters.
