The Vaselines - I Hate the 80s

by Rich Morris Rating:7 Release Date:2010-06-12

"It wasn't all Duran Duran Duran Duran," chirp The Vaselines on this, their first new material to be released for 20 years. And how apt that they should use this opportunity to stick the knife into the decade that has become a Spitting Image-faced mongoose around the neck of UK pop culture, reduced by irony-addled successive generations to nothing more than a smoke-machined haze of leg warmers, robot dancing and big hair LOL.

Less talked about is the fact that this most divisive of decades also produced self-sufficient, mumblecore indie bands like The Vaselines just as surely as it produced yuppies, Eurythmics and Fine Young Cannibals. "What do you know?/ You weren't there," Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee sing, making it sound funny and sad and sweet and bitter, all at once just like they always did. We can only hope La Roux and Hurts are paying close attention. 'I Hate the 80s' is available to download now of http://www.thevaselines.co.uk/.
