LCD Soundsystem - Oh You (Christmas Blues)

by Rich Morris Rating:9 Release Date:2010-03-15

Obviously, we at Soundblab are going leg-humping, drooling-at-the-mouth crazy waiting for LCD Soundsystem's new album to drop, but to salve our pain we now have this track (available to stream at, taken from the upcoming LCD-soundtracked Ben Stiller film Greenberg. 'Oh You (Christmas Blues)' sounds like a homage to the alienated rock star temper tantrums Pink Floyd specialised in on albums like Animals and The Wall. James Murphy previously paid tribute to the sound of classic Floyd on the drifting, sleepy-eyed 'Never as Tired as When I'm Waking Up' on LCD Soundsystem's first album, but 'Oh You (Christmas Blues)' sounds like the work of a man who's gone totally ape shit from sleep deprivation. Over squalls of irritated guitar, ominous hanging piano chords and dub bass, Murphy howls and wails in an uninhibited way we've not heard from him before. Towards the end, everything explodes in a massive freak out that has to be heard to be believed.

So what do we think? Well, as gob-smacking as this track is, it may not indicate the sound of LCD Soundsystem's upcoming album. Murphy said in NME that Greenberg's soundtrack consists of a series of period pastiches. So is 'Oh You (Christmas Blues)' meant to be from the prog rocking 70s? Time will tell, of course, but one thing is clear: James Murphy is currently incapable of making bad music, whatever he happens to turn his hand to. Godspeed, new LCD Soundsystem album. Godspeed.
