The White Stripes - Icky Thump

by Rich Morris Rating: Release Date:

What happens when Jack White takes his obsession with Led Zep gonzo riffary, strips it back to nothing but thrusting, death-driving, screaming-nerve machismo, and stretches it beyond sanity, through endless needle-point crescendos, murky, atonal organ dabblings, and whole minutes of nothing more than autistic pounding. What's it about? Literally, who the hell knows. At one point, White takes Bush-era America to task over its treatment of immigrants. But maybe that was how he felt on the day. After all, this is the man who decried those who let their music be used on adverts and then happy pulled down his kecks to receive a frosty Coke can up his artistic integrity. But never mind, because 'Icky Thump' is a prime example of kind of counter intuitive, so-dumb-it's-brilliant work of rock'n'roll weirdy genius which we got used expecting from The White Stripes during the noughties.
