KMFDM - The Showbox

by Brian Lange. Rating:9 Release Date:2011-11-30

KMFDM kicked off their North American Salvation tour at the famous Showbox in Seattle this July 18.

Sasha Konietzko, KMFDM’s founding member and only remaining original member, has made a whopping 19 studio albums under the KMFDM moniker. KMFDM may have been around since the early 80s, but they still rock the stage like taut teenage German athletes geared up to sweep the Olympic Games.

In an intimate stage setting, KMFDM opt for no barrier in the crowd, allowing spectators to stand right up against the stage. Loyal fans earn their allegiance this evening. One such fan, here from the moment the doors open until KMFDM take the stage, clutches his rightful spot in front, and receives his well-earned fist bump from Lucia Cifarelli prior to the band’s third song.

Another fan calls out, “Hey Steve!” between songs, to which comes a quick reply and a smile - “What?” - and the two actually have some brief banter as if they're friends from days gone by. A room full of ‘old folks’ proves just how long KMFDM has been around, cranking out industrial beats like no other, and how dedicated their fans are.

Except for a few programmed LED light towers and a little bit of smoke machine for that little bit of je ne sais quoi, a simplistic banner featuring the signature artwork from long-time collaborator Aidan Hughes is the primary backdrop for the show. Sasha and Lucia are positioned at Kraftwerk-style podiums, well equipped with lights to dazzle and noise machines to break eardrums and distribute the tinnitus. How industrially badass can you get?

After decades of touring, you would expect KMFDM to put on a good show. Well, they do not disappoint at all. Years of progress shows in the quality and fluidity of their perfromance. But how Lucia didn't collapse from heat exhaustion being in that sexy leather corset, I'll never know.

I once knew a guy that liked these and Depeche Mode - until I told him what their name stood for and he stopped liking them!
