The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Manchester Sound Control

by Steve Rhodes Rating: Release Date:

First thoughts about The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are usually laden with unfair criticisms that they are insufferably twee, overly cheery, with an anorak-wielding following who carry their haircuts and Sarah records back catalogues on their sleeves. On their first headline tour since the releasing their second album Belong, TPOBPAH dispel all of these falsehoods and more. In the dank loft or cowshed environment of Manchester's Sound Control they are loud, cathartic and produce a stunning, frenzied and powerful performance which the Friday night crowd relish. Maybe it's the experience of working with uber-producers Flood and Alan Moulder that has helped the band, but the sound is far more expansive and fuller and the songs leap around the room, despite not having the greatest venue and PA to help them.

Ripping through 'Belong', 'This Love is Fucking Right' and the lush 'A Teenager in Love', TPOBPAH are upbeat and enthusiastic, but it's 'Heart in the Heartbreak' that really gets the crowd on side, fervently singing and bouncing along. Newer songs 'Heaven's Gonna Happen Now', 'My Terrible Friend' and particularly 'The Body' are well received and are great advertisements for the progression of the new album and how well it's translated live, but it's 'Come Saturday' and 'Young Adult Friction' which get the best reaction. The latter, closing the main set, is TPOBPAH's anthem and is passionately delivered by them, at a frenetic pace, sending the crowd into rapturous delirium.

With a couple of more relaxed songs in the encore and a two minute guitar blast in a second encore which even the soundman didn't know was coming, TPOBPAH tonight produced an amazing, beefed-up performance that belies their alleged obsessions with C86. Any perceived sugariness is long-gone, instead here is an increasingly confident band, which has the sounds and the songs to warm the hearts and entice any statues in an audience to bounce around like lunatics.
