You Say Party - The Hope, Brighton

by Tom Doyle Rating: Release Date:

Those brave or foolish enough to venture out to The Hope in sub-zero temperatures were rewarded with an intimate performance by Canadian five-piece You Say Party (YSP). Local openers 900 Spaces were enjoyable with tight rhythm and great singing from Emma Lou. Next up were Stars and Sons; the band's soaring melodies and Christmas sweaters impressed the thawing audience.

When YSP hit the stage they blitzed through their hour-long set, playing new tracks as well as favourites such as 'There is XXXX'. Particularly impressive was 'Lonely's Lunch', a menacing, hook-laden number with a new video worth watching. With her glittered coat, red lipstick and flowing curly locks, Becky Ninkovic is the beating heart that truly elevates YSP; her swooning, vulnerable voice was spine-tingling in combination with the haunting synths and driving drums. Making good on her "I'll come closer if you guys don't" threat, Ninkovic hopped down to sing to the crowd from a foot away, looking every inch an electro-rock star.

Ninkovic dedicated a song to former drummer Devon Clifford who tragically died during a homecoming gig this April, but a warm group hug suggested that YSP are coming to terms with who they are, and where they're going.
