Foals - Rock City, Nottingham

by Richard Howard Rating: Release Date:

Oxford five-piece Foals took to the stage as an air of anticipation swept through Rock City and with a confidence and swagger set about entertaining a packed crowd. After the success of 2008 debut album Antidotes, Foals have followed it up with their second offering in May of this year, Mercury Prize nominated Total Life Forever and look like they're in it for the long haul.

Foals created a wall of sound as heavy guitars and pounding drum beats were ably assisted by the strong vocals of frontman Yannis Phillippakis. The nature of the music followed a similar pattern throughout as the enthusiastic band cranked up the volume and blasted out their catchy electro-indie melodies and feed off the energy of an adoring crowd. They played new and old alike, including 'Miami' and 'Blue Blood' from their most recent album as well as fan favourites such as 'Cassius' as a mass sing-along ensued.

Playing at a ferocious pace, Foals showed they know how to entertain, with Yannis playing from on top of the speakers at the side of the stage at one point, followed later by a daredevil dive into the crowd. The rest of the band played on, oblivious as their bandmate managed to find his way back to the stage with a little help from the Nottingham public. A treat for the eyes as well as the ears, Foals' cranked up the entertainment value with a display of stage lights which wouldn't have been out of place at any fireworks display the previous evening.

Perhaps the highlight of the gig was the epic 'Spanish Sahara', a wistful track that takes you away to a far away place, building and building to a euphoric crescendo which had everyone in raptures. Many of the tracks began with a trademark drum beat and then exploded into an all out attack as guitars sprung into life and the band flexed their muscles. On stage for an hour and 20 minutes, Foals produced a show of total commitment,.Try and catch them as they continue their UK tour.
