Atlas Sound - Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel

by Rich Morris Rating: Release Date:

The debut release from the solo project of Deerhunter's lead singer Bradford Cox, Let the Blind Lead... mixed ambient washes of sound, acoustic strumming and snatches of dialogue to create a series layered, ever shifting soundscapes. The spectral flutter of 'A Ghost Story' and the mournful 'Recent Bedroom' are like Godspeed You Black Emperor! at their most becalmed. Many songs, like 'Winter Vacation' and 'Scraping Past' are underpinned by subtle house beats but curiously these rhythms do not propel the music forward. Instead, like the experimental disco of Arthur Russell, the cascading music simply drifts at its own speed across the beats causing a gentle feeling of dislocation in the listener. Meanwhile, 'Cold as Ice' and the motorik beat of 'River Card' gradually reveal beautiful melodies, like winter sun filtering through bare trees.

Best tracks: 'Scraping Past', 'Cold as Ice', 'Winter Vacation'
