Berne - Conversation

by Steve Ricciutti Rating:7 Release Date:2015-11-18

The new EP recording from Maltese artist Berne is an interesting overview of her music for those, like me, who were uninitiated. I would have preferred she show me more, but there’s definitely some things to enjoy.

The disc starts strong thanks to Berne’s voice; at times grand and epic like Evanescence’s Amy Lee (“The Scene”), at other times playful and charming (“Espresso-Oh”), and even a hint of wicked intrigue like Siouxsie Sioux on “Lights.” The latter goes on a bit long, taking a trippy-noise detour mid-song, aspiring to more than it achieves, but she certainly gets points for trying. The last song is “In the Woods,” a song with an available video making the rounds. It’s a haunting song and highlights the delicate nature of her voice as well as the drama and imagery that echoes throughout.

This is music for fans of ethereal music with a penchant for theatricality. I enjoyed three of the songs, and on a four song EP, that’s a solid average. I’d like to hear more.
