The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Hell

by Jeff Penczak Rating:8 Release Date:2015-11-18

While you can still grab their latest album for free from their website, the New York quartet have dropped this quirky three-track EP until the real thing comes along. The title track is pure 80s pop (UK style), with a bouncy beat a la Culture Club or Gang of Four, but retaining their NY roots via frontman Kip Berman’s Tom Verlainish yelping.

‘Ballad of the Band’ is a revelation – the Felt classic as performed by The Cure, ca Head on the Door, while another brilliant cover, James’ ‘Laid’, turns the mic over to new keyboardist Jen Goma, who keeps the sound rooted in Bowery deca-dance with a Patti Smith snarl serpentining around a soaring melody not unlike Echo & the Bunnymen. Short, sweet, and fun for lovers of UK 80s pop.
