Skinny Girl Diet - Reclaim Your Life EP

by Blaire Lund Rating:6 Release Date:2015-11-05

Reclaim Your Life is the latest EP from London riot grrls Skinny Girl Diet. This band channels unmistakably 90s rock riffs with vocals that sound eerily like Courtney Love circa Hole’s Live Through This era. These young women, all under the age of 20, have put together some impressive songs with great production, enchanting, rage-fueled, distorted guitars, and angst-filled lyrics.

Songs 'Fix Me' and 'Silver Spoons' sound like some lost outtakes of a Hole album, while 'Wasted Smile' starts out sounding like one of Hole’s mellower songs before, out of nowhere, the singer breaks out into a ‘huh’ style scream that beckons comparison to Kat Bjelland of the even heavier 90s riot grrl band Babes In Toyland. For all the glorious rage and thrashing guitars, though, there still seems to be something missing. Their sound is so reminiscent of bands like Hole and Babes In Toyland, that comparison is inevitable, and when you compare you realize that they aren’t quite up to par with their predecessors. This is still a very young band, though, and I’m very interested to see what they come up with in the future when they’ve had time to grow and come into themselves. This is a band to keep your eyes on.
