Tuff Love - Dregs EP

by Rob Taylor Rating:8 Release Date:2015-11-06

The combined voices of Julie Eistenstein and Suse Bear of Scotland’s Tuff Love share much in common with the cherry-lipped harmonies of indie darlings Kim and Kelly Deal. The Deals, whose vocals blended so exquisitely, creating a unique polyphonic sound which was oddly soothing and viscerally exciting at the same time. Iconic rock chicks Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly also shared similar vocal characteristics. They all stuck it to the male indie fraternity with a mixture of assertive femininity, rock chic and the purring vocals of true catwomen.

Also combining ravishing vocals, acerbic lyrics, lulling melodies and crunchy guitars, Tuff Love match the 1990s inspired sound with some pretty impressive songwriting. There’s not a duff track on here. ‘Duke’ and ‘Carbon’ in particular are inspired indie anthems in wait, beautifully measured and sprinkled with memorable hooks. Tuff Love are one of those bands that succeeds in masking their underlying melancholy with feel-good songs that play like cool adult lullabies.

The songs on Tuff Love’s Dregs are anything but what the self-effacing title suggests.
