Bast - Spectres

by D R Pautsch Rating:5 Release Date:2014-02-25

Some time ago, in another life, I was treated to a lecture in the differences between brands of metal. Black metal was described as having 'cookie monster lyrics', heavy, drum-laden riffs and distortion. This debut from Bast hits all those prerequisites and adds in long songs and a slow build throughout. The five tracks here are lengthy and dark, but the crunching guitars, walls of feedback and slow death-knell of drumming are not revolutionary.

This is a dark and unrelenting album. It works best when the tempo raises or, as in the challenging and standout instrumental 'Psychonauts', when they start to experiment. This track in particular, clocking in at over 11 minutes, uses its multiple phases and changes-up the instrumentation to give a more varied delivery.

Bast haven't broken the mould with this one and its not going to appeal to people who are not fans of the genre. However, if you like your metal black, your lyrics growly and your music dark then this might be for you.
