San Cisco - Awkward

by Greg Spencer Rating:8 Release Date:2012-07-13

San Cisco are massive in their native Australia, and the release of Awkward marks their UK debut and they might have picked a perfect time to unleash this effervescent and delightful bunch of songs. Firstly, it's a great listen, packed with vivid imagination and a playful sense of fun that a lot of bands miss out on nowadays.

'Awkward' and 'Rocket Ship' are fantastic little pop songs which, given the airtime would, thrive on UK radio just like down under. These songs remind you of how good Tegan & Sara were a few years ago; they're great pop songs but at the same time they feel like they actually have a deeper meaning. The band also prove that they can change their style too: 'Reckless' is a slow and melancholic end to the EP with the poignant lyric: "Reckless is fun when you're not the one that gets hurt" ringing out all the way through. Some might think it's a bad move to put an Arctic Monkeys cover on your debut EP but actually the track '505' works pretty well in shifting the tone from upbeat pop in the first half of the EP to a slower and fresh sound to end the record.

It would be great to see these guys get some mainstream recognition as they've got bundles of talent, and with being championed early on from the likes of Radio 1's Huw Stephens and airplay from XFM and BBC6 Music, hopefully the future's bright. All in all, it's an EP which would perfectly soundtrack being on a beach somewhere, preferably Australia, sipping a cool beer. The summery feel of the EP is evident, and even though this music won't change the world or say anything truly profound, it's a real cracker.
