Spiritualized - Sweet Heart Sweet Light

by Dan Clay Rating:9 Release Date:2012-04-16

Bands touring former glories for nostalgia can often inspire new work of a similar standard. On the back of Spiritualized's Ladies and Gentlemen….We Are Floating in Space tour comes Sweet Heat Sweet Light, influenced heavily by the psychedelic gospel-pop of that album, and boy does it show. Anyone familiar with Let It Come Down, the band's fourth album, will know exactly what to expect here too; big gospel-tinged anthemic bundles of sublime joy and on 'Little Girl', 'So Long You Pretty Thing' and highlight 'Too Late', that's exactly what you get.

However, don't let them or the brief instrumental intro 'Huh' lull you into a false sense of security, for the rocky swagger of lead single '

' and the psychedelic fuzz of 'Get What You Deserve' and 'Headin' for the Top Now' show Jason Pierce can rock with the best of them, even if the former switches tack halfway through to more gospel-sounding pleasures.

This album contains some of the most delightful string-drenched songs Pierce has produced to date, and the final two excel even further. '

' sounds like the lost Oasis classic that never was.

So while Ladies and Gentlemen... might be the template SHSL is being sold on, fans of the classic and beautifully beguiling Let It Come Down are in for an utter treat too.
