Laura Gibson - La Grande

by Dan Clay Rating:8 Release Date:2012-01-09

Another Laura makes a bid for the crown of folk-indie queen after Laura Marling's A Creature I Don't Know cemented her regal position last year. After 2009's Beast of Seasons, Gibson returns with a less stripped-down and more instrumental affair which pays homage to the 'curious energy' (her words) of the Oregon city the album is named after.

All of which means we get the stompy 'La Grande' and beautiful '

' cement the appeal shown in the album's first half, while closing tracks 'Time is Not' and 'Feather Lungs' show the talented Gibson has a voice to match Regina Spektor's - she just needs that crossover hit to make it to the big leagues and join Marling and co.

Much like those contempories, Gibson is showing that very often, quiet is the new loud.
