White Denim - Last Day of Summer

by Nathan Fidler Rating:8.5 Release Date:2011-12-05

Television advertisers must explode in their underwear every time White Denim release a new album. They produce fun, accessible music while remaining an obscure band (the perfect combination) and have already had several songs used for promoting cars and washing up detergents. Having only just released their third full album, D, this year another one might already seem odd. This, however, is a collection of odds and ends which was released in 2010 originally as a download only. Lucky for us then that it is now available in physical format.

Although these songs are meant to be scraps they stand up well as an album. The band once again pile together itchy, restless drumming with hooky melodies and jazzy jams. How these guys aren't bigger is a mystery...and also something of a blessing. 'Tony Fatti' is the perfect example of what these guys do so well in terms of rock, and yet it doesn't cover all of their bases. 'If You're Changing' sounds like The Eagles meeting The Beach Boys with twanging guitars and harmonious vocals. The movement between loping balladry which opens the song and the jittery second half is brilliant, giving way to the best lyrics on the album: "I seen the folks sleeping and it looks like fun".

Let's not forget their psychedelic tendencies; on this scrapbook album they include a couple of instrumental jams, 'Light Light Light' following a wayward trumpet and 'Incaviglia' sounding like the theme tune to a Mexican crime thriller. If you yearn for creativity in music then look no further. Any Shins fans out there will feel alarm bells ring however in 'Some Wild Going Outward' as they appear to peel a guitar line right out of 'Sleeping Lessons'. It is so bang on you wonder if they asked James Mercer for the permission to use it.

That aside, there isn't enough room to list the brilliant mixtures of genres here. Instead it's best to say that White Denim sound like they're doing an impression of your favourite playlist on shuffle. Let's keep them our little secret shall we?
