Dubi Dolczek - Dubi Dolczek In Space Part 2 - Voyage To The Cat’s Paw Nebula

These days you are bound to pick up music by an unknown or relatively unknown artist mostly by chance. I mean, who would intentionally pick up an album by a guy who goes under the alias Dubi Dolczek and with such a long title as Dubi Dolczek In Space Part 2 - Voyage To The Cat’s Paw Nebula? Ok, maybe all his family, friends and colleagues from his other musical ventures who know him under his real name of Graeme Smith from Bristol.

But then, anyone who has stumbled across one of his previous two albums, particularly the second one, Dubi In Space Part 1 - The Emerald Gauntlet will already know what all the other unsuspecting listeners are missing...

A lot, frankly! Imagine space-age exotica, the original, Martin Denny/Esquivel type, via dub (the Lee ‘Scratch” Perry/Mad Professor type cover should be a giveaway), combined with the Grateful Dead jazz variations the particularly did on From The Mars Hotel.

But then, Dubi doesn’t stop there. The opener “Do The Gloop”, adds light touches of Leonard Cohen’s “Tower Of Song” to the proceedings, while the next track, “Didn’t Planet,” recalls the Friends era Beach Boys. And that’s just for starters! He doesn’t miss on Isaac Hayes’ soundtrack stuff on “Tecron Suite” or the classic doo-wop of “A Nova Again” and about a few hundred other things, without taking the exotica dub blanket off at any point.

“Plasma Essence” is exactly what its title says - the sum of all the parts Graeme, or should I say Dubi presents on this album and it all works while you are drifting in space on some sunny beach somewhere. Let Dubi introduce himself, it is worth it.
