Combining old-time psych, Seventies electronics reincarnated as post-rock, drone, and throwing in dream pop as an extra sound as an enticing combination is possibly easy to do on paper, but for some reason, it hasn’t been done enough (or possibly not good enough). Maybe the artists contemplating such a venture don’t want to ‘overcomplicate’ things, maybe they just want to stick to what they know, whatever… Then here come the duo HOO and their debut album Centipede Wisdom, to show us all that it can be done, and done well at that.

If you thought HOO is an acronym, you instantly get one plus mark - as it stands for Holton’s Opulent Oog, Holton being Nick Holton songwriter and synth player from Black Hearted Brother, while, I guess, opulent oog possibly (or not) is for former Slowdive member Ian McCutcheon, with ‘old friends’ like Neil Halstead, Roland Juno and Robin Bennett chipping in.

With their backgrounds, the duo already have excellent starting points to pick, choose, and combine all of the musical elements of the above-mentioned genres at their will, and they do that to perfection on the two opening tracks here, “Eyes Of Sorrow” and “I Think It Ia Now Over”.

But then, the centipede is an animal you can take a part of and it would still keep going, as the music here does. And to that effect, with “Tic Tic” the music shifts in the direction of prime Seventies Tangerine Dream with somebody from Kraftwerk guesting to add a subtle beat to the proceedings. “Second Pulse” is a psych/prog cross where you can pick and choose your participants, while from “This World Of Mine” the duo swirl into the post-Meddle Pink Floyd territory, the better part of it, anyway, throwing in elements from here and there along the way.
