Perth, Australia’s Psychedelic Porn Crumpets might not have the most gracious of band names around, but on the evidence of And Now For The Whatchamacallit their latest album, they and their ringleader Jack McEwan seem to be building a track record behind them.

It seems that the album and the psychedelic in the band name as a cue enough, will not fall on deaf ears. For one, they have been extensively touring the US, and for two, there’s their countrymen King Gizzard and The Wizard Lizzard, who have already amassed a huge following.

And if you think that the comparisons with The Gizzards are in order, you are completely on track. At moments, the comparisons, particularly in the guitar sounds can be uncanny, and you might be under the impression that you are listening to a King Gizzard album, like on the opener “Keen For Kick Ons” you’ve not yet heard before, which would be no surprise, because they’ve already made so many.

But then the PPC’s haven’t made so many albums and they do go into other directions too, like the harmony of “Bill’s Mandolin” or “Native Tongue”, or the Fuzz Club sound-meets-Jimi Hendrix of “Social Candy” and “When In Rome”.

Also, there is always that often posed question in rock music - is something bad because it sounds like something else, and the answer, as always should be - not if it sounds good.

And PPC’s do sound good, avoid sameishness and do not overstay their welcome with the ten tracks here clocking at under 35 minutes and do leave open space to diversify their sound, as “My Friend’s Liquid”, and the closer "Dezi's Adventure, for example, indicate. For the moment, frankly, that is quite enough.
