Abjects - Never Give Up

Debut album from international female punkers featuring a Spanish guitarist (Noemi), Italian drummer (Alice), and Japanese bassist (Yuki). ‘Aburrido’ and ‘Mañana’ scream (en español) out of your speakers like blasts of dynamite, while the title cut introduces some welcome harmonies, structured melodies and Yuki's throbbing bass – a bit of the Slits-meet-Raincoats is not far off base, although the energy level wanes about halfway through. Garage punk should really be condensed into under-three-minute hit-and-run bolts of lightning. When you start to top four and even push five minutes as about half these tunes do, you’re starting to wear out your welcome and the audience’s patience. Having tossed that grenade into the mix, there’s plenty to like, with the snarly, fuck-you attitude of ‘The Storm’ peeling paint and puncturing eardrums with reckless abandon (and more boss harmonies that invite, no demand singalong fist shaking and projectile pogoing).

The short and sweet rocket-launchers ‘Dream Song’ and the Ramonesy adrenaline rush ‘Awake’ work better, creating just enough sweat and breathless, heart-pumping riffage to raise blood pressures without inducing clockwatching ennui. ‘Surf’ adds a groovy-yet-eerie vibe to the timeworn genre and, saving the best for last, the gorgeous ballad (!) ‘A Long Way To Go’ provide a little rest from the carnage. A promising beginning to what looks set to be a fruitful project. Let’s hope they tighten up those song lengths next time out!
