Encouraged by rave reviews (their comeback album Weather Diaries graced our Best of 2017 list) and soldout reunions gigs, Oxford’s finest return with a 4-track EP, highlighted by recent single ‘Pulsar’, which continues the album’s dreamy ambient shoegaze vibe. Andy Bell’s shimmering guitar explodes in shards of white noise, while the band’s gift for earworm melody has not been abandoned. ‘Keep It Surreal’ may surprise (or infuriate) purists with its bubblegummy pop fizz, but Bell tosses in a shrieking, distorted solo to reel us back in, and ‘Cold Water People’ is a warped (literally – did someone fall asleep on the tape machine?) cotton-mouthed experiment in orch pop that works, particularly its marriage of soaring strings, backwards guitars, and toytown piano tinklings.

Bell explains that the epic closer (and latest single) ‘Catch You Dreaming’ is “written from the perspective of being one of the last two people alive, watching as the Universe is ending”. It’s an apocalyptic “love song about fate, nostalgia, and having no regrets." Mark Gardner’s vocals may be a little too “boy band” cute (a Timberlake cover would probably move truckloads), but the extended jazzy instro break that envelops the last half of the song in an electronic, funky dance groove shows the lads are willing to explore new musical avenues and bodes well for that next album. The EP release gig at ULU on the 16th looks to be the first great musical event of 2018!
