The Prids - Do I Look Like I'm in Love?

The breadth of ambition and sweeping sound on the new album from indie mainstays, The Prids is impressive at a cognitive level, but after several listens I'm left underwhelmed. The mongrelising of post-punk, shoegaze and noise-pop occasionally works at an instrumental level, but the translation to song structures misses the finish mark completely. Frustrating and baffling is my lingering apprehension. The Prids have prodigious scope, but the fire smoulders rather than burns, and the vapours of pungent guitar sound rescind rather than hang in the air. It is a striking melding of sounds but the songs don’t seem to go anywhere. Compare the shoegaze of ‘English Treasure’ with Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine or Swervedriver for instance, and there’s a world of difference. The music should transport the listener whilst retaining a kind of trance, but rarely on this album does anything commute beyond a post-narcotic slumber.

Still, to be fair, The Prids very ably recall the 4AD heyday on tracks like ‘Mangled Hearts’ where dreamy vocals and reverb combine in sweet unison. Elsewhere, there are meandering synth chords that become irritatingly repetitive on ‘Colliding’ and again, I can’t help concluding the songwriting is not up to scratch. I baulk at making this assessment because it is unkind, but several listens didn’t improve my perception. ‘The Shape’ is ironically, shapeless and boring until the last 15 seconds where it builds and then, well, crashes against a wall. Man, the band could really have intensified there, and the lack of cacophony is just annoying. ‘I Remember Everything’ starts out like a monotone Robert Smith B-Side, and the vocals are lame. Another opportunity towards the end of that track to really develop the [ahem] ideas falls flatter than a jellyfish at low tide. For the most part on Do I Look Like I’m In Love, that’s where they remain.
