Hope Sandoval And The Warm Inventions - Son of a Lady EP

by Kevin Orton Rating:6 Release Date:2017-09-15

Hope Sandoval’s latest EP with the Warm Inventions begins with a lullaby for times than can only be described as troubling. “Sleep sleep until you’re getting tired”, she coos before hitting the heart of the matter, “Weep weep until your well runs dry”. A lullaby for a restless mind, tossing and turning at night.

‘Antiquity’ follows and while it’s no rapid departure from Sandoval’s signature brand of dream-like reverie, there’s nothing to suggest her style has gone stale. Harmonica, droning guitar and pulsing drums keep things from dozing off in the bath. The cinematic title track stretches out under a big sky on a sunny day. Musically, the stuff of mirage and oasis. Lyrically, Sandoval at her most obtuse.  While not her most accessible, it does have its hazy charms. ‘Let Me Get There’ ends this little EP with some ghostly atmospherics and earthy acoustic guitar.

This isn’t the sort of thing that aspires to set the world on fire or reinvent the wheel. It’s just a little note, slipped under the door to remind you to keep your chin up despite the fact the world may be ending. While not exactly Mazzy Star, her musings with the Warm Inventions is all fans could Hope for.
