The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Don't Get Lost

by Jim Harris Rating:8 Release Date:2017-02-24

Well, with Anton having his own studio and all, the years of one release right after another continues at an even more frenetic pace.  BJM’s last album was just four months ago. (He’s becoming the Prince of psych music…)  And for us lovers of his stuff, it’s something to get more excited about than most alternative music we immerse ourselves in.

If there is one thing for sure, Anton has taken BJM about as far from his Methadone days as ever.  The days of heavy guitar layered shoegazing songs interspersed with sparkling ‘It Girl’ pop gems have been replaced, since about Aufheben, with heavy Eastern beats, weird guest vocalists, and have enough electronic flights of fancy to compare the band more to Eno than Ride or the Jesus and Mary Chain.

I’m not complaining, Anton is one of alternative music’s true genius artists, and that is usually defined by looking forward to anything you can get your hands on.

Don’t Get Lost is a nice album that again has Anton doing more processing of the music than jamming out with his five guitar sound.  His latest foray is droning electronica with heavy rhythm and repetitious flights of controlled fancy, the strongest of these songs has Tess Parks’ gravelly shoegaze perfect voice riding over the top of the musical layers.

I have to say I like Anton’s current obsession with dark repetitive electronica but I don’t love it.  It seems to amount to more tinkering than the rich song structures of the middle part of his career.  His studio no doubt is state of the art, filled with high tech musical toys, as if he is flying a virtual musical 787, but the days of gritty Stones and Dylan-inspired, psych powered rock and roll songs seems fairly distant.

It’s not like I’m waxing nostalgic either.  With Don’t Get Lost the layers of dark noise seem to be headed more toward old Pink Floyd than have him being the consummate innovator.  But I’ll hang with Anton.  Who wouldn’t?

I totally agree. Great review Jim. I think he's having a little mania phase, and his creativity has run wild, occasionally to his detriment. Not all easy listening but he hits the mark often, and as you say, he's something of a musical genius.

The guy has gone nuts. He's posting new videos on his YT channel every day almost ! A little manic but he's having a creative splurge.
