Hoops - Hoops EP

by Jim Cunnar Rating:8 Release Date:2016-08-26

Middle America has churned out some pretty good indie rock over the years.  Bloomington, Indiana based Hoops, who are surprisingly not named for their hometown obsession with the blacktop sport of the same definition, add to the collection with their self-titled EP, released on Fat Possum.

The four piece has put out three tapes on their own website, earning their chops with various bands around the Bloomington scene.  Musically, they tread in the same waters as contemporaries Beach House and Real Estate, but more from eighties darlings The Ocean Blue. Highlights of the five song EP include "Going Strong", a dreamy bass driven toe-tapper with some great guitar work that plays to fade out, and "Gemini", whose opening guitar riff channels Marvin Gaye's "Aint No Mountain High Enough".  The production is strong and the musicianship is tight.

Though just out of the gate, the future is bright for Hoops.  Their first European tour is around the corner, and hopefully, a full-length shortly after that.

Keep them on your radar.
