Pussy Riot will be freed

The two jailed members of feminist punk band Pussy Riot should be released in the coming days after an amnesty law was passed in Russian Parliament.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina are currently serving two year jail sentences for hooliganism motivated by religious hatred after they took part in a protest against Putin in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour on February 21, 2012.

The wide-ranging amnesty, supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin, covers minors, first-time offenders and mothers with small children. It was timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the Russian constitution.

Tolokonnikova's husband Pyotr Verzilov wrote on his Twitter blog that officials have promised to release the two women "right away and without bureaucratic delay”.

The move has been widely viewed as Putin’s attempt to improve perceptions of Russia’s human right record in the run-up to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Thirty Greenpeace activists are also set to be freed.
