Super Furry Animals embed Yeti fur into vinyl record
Super Furry Animals will release Super Furry Animals at the BBC limited edition boxset on November 23rd and have announced a limited number of vinyl discs will contain Yeti fur. Not real fur, of course, no yetis were harmed in the making of these records.
Designer Mark James says: “From the very start I wanted to do something with the Yetis and the fur, thinking about the idea of offering a piece of ‘SFA DNA’ to own as part of the package. They’re evident throughout the artwork, from the sleeves featuring each Yeti face to the new Yeti footprint illustration that Pete Fowler has drawn for the foil-blocked, limited-edition print. Giving people a piece of their own Yeti to own, not least the unprecedented inlay of fur into a vinyl record, has taken the concept a leap further. It’s more of an artefact, a bona fide piece of musical history, than just a record. The envelopes containing a lock of fur, including some still splattered with ‘blood’ from the killing off of the Yetis at Hammersmith Apollo in 2003, have all been filled by hand and hand numbered in the studio, by Cian.”
Longtime SFA collaborator Pete Fowler adds: “They’ve been killed off before and keep coming back to life, but perhaps this is really it for the Furries’ Yetis. You can’t be seen in public with a dodgy haircut, can you? The band and Mark’s idea to put them at the heart of this project was a brilliant one and working on the new, footprint illustration was a pleasure as always. The way it has been realised in print, using blinding gold on black paper, couldn’t be any better. It was good to see an old friend again in the ‘Outspaced’ bear too, who gets another outing as a cover star.”
The boxset comes in two versions, a 4 disc version limited to 400 copies and a 5 disc version limited to just 100 copies which contain the Yeti fur embedded vinyl. All 500 copies will contain a lock of Yeti fur from the actual SFA costumes worn by the band.
