Ramones drummer Tommy dies

Tommy Ramone, the original drummer in legendary punk band The Ramones, has died at the age of 62.

His death, which was confirmed via the band’s Facebook page today (July 12), marks the passing of the last member of the band’s original line-up.

Thomas Erdelyi, better known as Tommy Ramone, drummed for band from 1974 to 1978 and co-produced their first three albums.

The Ramones were one of the first New York punk bands. Their high-octane, riff-heavy but tuneful sound was copied by bands worldwide, as was their uniform of leather and ripped denim.

Ramone died in a hospice on July 11 following treatment for bile duct cancer, according to BBC News. The announcement of his death on the band’s Facebook page was accompanied by this quote of his: "It wasn't just music in The Ramones: it was an idea. It was bringing back a whole feel that was missing in rock music – it was a whole push outwards to say something new and different.”
