Manchester's Night & Day Cafe threatened with closure

Owners of Manchester's Night & Day Cafe have launched an e-petition to remove a Statutory Nuisance Abatement Notice after it was issued by Manchester City Council.

Remarkably the notice was issued after just one nearby resident complained. The venue has been open since 1991, yet the resident only moved in a year ago. The owners could face a £20,000 fine or 6 months in jail if they fail to deal with the complaint.

Situated in the heart of the city's Northern Quarter and surrounded by plenty of other pubs and clubs, you have to wonder how one complaint has brought the Council to act.

Owner Gareth Butterworth spoke to the Manchester Evening News: "The worst case scenario is that we shut down – bringing an end the employment of everyone who works here, not to mention destroying one of the major hubs for live music in Manchester, for local and international musicians," he told the paper.

"It’s very upsetting. We understand that this resident has lived here for less than a year. We’re an independent business that’s been a staple of the Manchester arts scene for 23 years. We tried to speak to the resident, to explain the nature of our business, and we understand noise can be annoying – but why would you choose to move next door to a live music venue if noise is going to be an issue?"

Johnny Marr, Frank Turner and Tim Burgess have already shown their support, click here to join them by signing the petition.
