Pussy Riot to be freed?

The two members of feminist punk band Pussy Riot who remain imprisoned could be freed under an amnesty proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, lawyers indicated on Tuesday.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina are serving two year jail sentences for staging a protest against Putin in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour on February 21, 2012. Tolokonnikova, 24, and Alyokhina, 25, could also be eligible for release as mothers of young children.

A third member of the band, Yekaterina Samutsevich, was also arrested but was freed on probation, with her sentence suspended. The group released the incendiary ‘Putin Lights Up the Fires’ last year.

The two women have been designated prisoners of conscience and their cause has been taken up by human rights groups including Amnesty International. Musicians and pop stars including Yoko Ono and Madonna have voiced support for the band.

In September this year, Tolokonnikova went on hunger strike in protest at alleged human rights violations in the Mordovia penal colony where she is held. She was later placed in a medical ward after not eating for five days.
