cool article, the Niki Minaj porno fantasy thing is particularly strange, though I like the way she says 'I really have a thing for American guys' on Super Bass
you all make some really good points and this is such a provocative subject. I dont agree with or endorse or believe what Tyler says. My main idea is that censoring art or villifying indivduals is dangerous and is a form of repression. Good to see such a lively debate on soundblab.
Sorry but this was really supposed to about music/art and not rape. It would be more constructive to attack someone like Jacob Zuma who was charged with rape in 2005 and is currently the president of south africa (opposed to a kid from compton.) Rape is an abomination and a terrible problem in some countries; the two contexts we're talking about are completely different and I dont think either are served well by drawing parallels.
The problematic parts of Tyler's lyrics are a manifestation of society's ills, he is not the cause, he is not a rapist. Villifying him is a conservative act. The horror, and the atrocity that is the systematic rape of women in africa is not related to what is essentially a child making music in California.
I don't think its anything to do with what's "acceptable" or not. Human nature can be pretty messed up and its healthy for that to be expressed not matter how unhealthy the impulse- we're bad milk,,,,drink it.
peace ;-)
With Tyler, I think its bravado, a young man who wants to assert himself and challenge a society that he sees as being hypocritically puritanical. How can the media be indignant about tyler's "misogyny", when you see the way the media treats women? He's being provocative to show how reactionary the mainstream can be. He's problematic, but really talented and clever.
